Clear-IT™ Closed Blood sampling System
Clear-IT™
Patient safety is a primary concern in the healthcare industry. A specific concern for patient safety in the hospital setting is related to blood loss and infections associated with blood sampling, a routine procedure. ICU anemia due to frequent blood sampling and catheter related infections due to frequent line manipulations can complicate the overall condition of such patients, which in turn can delay their recovery.

CDC guidelines for peripheral arterial catheters and pressure monitoring devices for adult and pediatric patients call for minimizing the number of manipulations of and entries into the pressure monitoring system and using a closed flush system (i.e, continuous flush), rather than an open system, to maintain the patency of the pressure monitoring catheters.

Elcam’s Clear-IT™ closed blood sampling system combines an In-Line Reservoir for collecting clearing volume and a Marvelous™ stopcock to facilitate flushing of the line and syringe tip. The Clear-IT is intended for blood sampling taken from the blood pressure monitoring line. The system minimizes blood waste, thus decreasing the risk of anemia as the clearing volume is reinfused back to the patient after sampling is completed. The closed in-line design and the integrated Marvelous stopcock can help in reducing microbial contamination.

Elcam Medical has recently conducted an initial flushing study in order to compare the Clear-IT™'s minimal residual volume feature to a similar device in the market.

Stopcocks for Infusion Therapy: Evidence and Experience by Lynn Hadaway
Lynn Hadaway
Stopcocks have a mixed reputation among clinicians who use them. On the one hand, the device simplifies infusion, blood sampling and drug administration routines, and is included in many standard procedures. On the other hand, research has validated the concern of increased risk of intraluminal contamination when using stopcocks and their contribution to catheter-related bloodstream infection (CR-BSI).

Lynn Hadaway, Med, RN-BC, CRNI is a published infusion expert with over 40 years practical expertise. She is very knowledgeable about the risks and all the devices. In a recently published article Lynn provides a combination of literature review and clinician practice survey in a complete report of stopcock use in addition to suggested practice changes for reducing the risks associated with stopcocks usage. She mentions the advantages of a reduced dead space and continuous flushing – features Elcam is proud to have integrated into the design of Marvelous™ (MRVLS) stopcock from the day it was developed.

Marvelous™ performance calculator
Marvelous™ continuous flushing
Using unique continuous flushing LAD stopcocks, such as Elcam’s Marvelous™ stopcock allows medical teams to improve infection control and save time while creating considerable cost savings. With Marvelous™ the fluid flow around the handle creates a unique “circumferential channel” that reaches the entire internal volume of the valve, assuring minimal residual volume. This continuous-flushing feature provides greater protection against bacterial colonization and blood clotting. It can also decrease the risk of inadvertent drug administration by minimizing drug residuals. In addition, the injection site remains needle free and closed - consistent with the CDC recommendations.

Help your customers calculate their unit's ROI

Elcam is happy to present a web based ROI calculation tool. We invite you to calculate annual savings per department and per bed depending on:
  • Daily access
  • Number of stopcocks per patient and number of LADs used per stopcock
  • Amount of caps and syringes used per access for every stopcock
You will be surprised how much you can save in the long run by using Marvelous™ continuous flushing LAD stopcocks.
